Existential
The existential approach focuses on the anxieties and uncertainties that are a fundamental part of life and existence, such as death, the fear of the unknown and the meaning of life. At its core is the idea that we all have the capabilities and personal responsibility for making decisions and creating our own success. Within this approach, we are encouraged to face our anxieties which come with being human; and accept that life is uncertain so we can move forward with our lives.
The therapeutic focus is to make sense of our emotional response to life experiences - whether this is trauma, loss, change or relationships, and understanding the significance to us personally. Through describing what we are experiencing in-relation to the therapist; the change in our understanding will already begin. Working existentially can also be particularly helpful with life transitions and changes such as divorce, redundancy or retirement, illness or disability and aging.
