Counselling in Schools

‘It is easier to educate happier people’

(BACP, 2011)

Having come from a previous career in teaching for two decades across  key-stages; in both public and private sectors and across cultures, and in light of the growing need; I am eager to support children in the school context. I have a rich and extensive experience of all that is entailed within the school system and the particular nuances which come with that. In addition, having undertaken accredited specialist training to counsel Young People within schools and my current counselling work within the education system, I have an in-depth understanding of all perspectives; that is, of the school culture and system, working as a team, safeguarding protocols, teacher-parent relationships and the child’s autonomy within that enabling me to appropriately support your pupils’ needs for effective counselling.

The benefits of counselling in education settings

Research* has shown that counselling can have a positive impact on the way that students experience their school and home lives.  Students can find it difficult to engage at school if they have had distressing experiences or are experiencing emotional difficulties. They may struggle with their studies, or show their distress through difficulties they have relating to teachers or other pupils.  Counselling can provide effective early intervention and prevention to enable students to manage their feelings and stress levels. It is also effective in helping students address issues such as anxiety, academic work stress, and friendship issues. In addition, those experiencing bereavement, parental separation, loss of self-confidence, self-harm, eating disorders and substance misuse can benefit in having a safe space to talk. In addition, it has been found that for students attending counselling sessions:

  • 86% reported improved ability to engage with learning
  • 84% reported greater stability or improvement in their self-esteem and well-being
  • 100% said their sessions had been ‘helpful’ or ‘very helpful’ to them

The Services I offer schools comply with the Department for Education guidelines ‘Counselling in Schools: a Blueprint for the Future’ 2015, and I can work in a diverse range of schools, including:
